ABSTRACT

Objective@#To investigate the effects of endurance running at different intensities on self-control of sedentary university students, and to reveal the immediate and sustained effects of exercise on cognitive control.@*Methods@#Ninety students with sedentary behaviors from 7 universities in a university city in Shandong Province were selected by cluster stratified random sampling. 21, 23, 21 and 25 students in the high, medium and low intensity groups and the blank control group completed the 30min endurance running exercise, combined with the willingness of the subjects. The Stroop test was conducted immediately after exercise, 5, 15 and 30 min after exercise, and the correct rate and response time of the Stroop test were used as two indicators of self-control.@*Results@#In the immediate post-exercise period, the correct response time for the control group ( 774.03 ±127.85)ms], the high-intensity group [(745.37±109.59)ms], the moderate-intensity group [(627.90±129.18)ms] and the low-intensity group [(689.90±129.79)ms] were statistically significant ( F =6.27, P <0.05). The correct rate for the control group [(94.40±2.02)%], the low-intensity group [(95.38±1.96)%], the high-intensity group [(92.43±2.32)%] and the moderate-intensity group [(96.39±1.08)%] were statistically significant ( F =14.87, P <0.05). High-intensity endurance running exercise was able to achieve the best performance at 30 min and beyond on the Stroop test response and correctness ( P <0.05), while moderate-intensity endurance running had a better effect on improving self-control than low-intensity endurance running at 30 min post-exercise.@*Conclusion@#High and moderate-intensity endurance running exercises can effectively improve self-control in sedentary university students. It is recommended that moderate or high intensity endurance running be performed as the body can tolerate it to improve self-control and cognitive ability.

ABSTRACT

Introduction:Migraine is a complex headache to treat, often with an unsatisfactory clinical response. Aerobic exercise, such as running, can be a non-pharmacological treatment to reduce migraine attacks. Objective:This systematic review with meta-analysis investigated the effects of running on frequency and intensity of pain in subjects with migraine compared with other or no aerobic exercise. Methods:Randomized and quasi-randomized clinical trials were searched between September and November 2021 in BVS, PubMed, Cochrane, CINAHL, SCOPUS, Embase, and Web of Science databases. The Cochrane Risk of Bias tool assessed methodological quality, and the recommendation ranking assessed the certainty of evidence. The frequency of migraine attacks was pooled in a meta-analysis (random effects) that included interval and continuous running subgroups. Results:Only two of the 483 studies analyzed were included in the review (52 individuals, 81% females). Migraine intensity was not included in the meta-analysis because only one study measured this outcome. None of the studies demonstrated that running reduced the frequency of migraine attacks (MD = -0.40 [95% CI = -1.61 to 0.81]). The studies included presented a high risk of bias and very low certainty of evidence. Conclusion:The results were not sufficient to recommend running as a treatment to reduce the frequency and intensity of migraine attacks.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction: Jogging can be a great way to improve physical condition, boosting mind and body. Its method of movement is simple, and there are no sporting limitations as to age, gender, or training place. Jogging is believed to help repair muscle and joint injuries in the lower limbs. Objective: To explore the effects of running on recovering lower limb muscles. Methods: We surveyed 60 undergraduate students who took a 400-meter test at the same site. According to the test results, they were divided into low, medium, and high fitness levels. A questionnaire survey was also used with 20 undergraduate students from the Physical Education Department. Four groups of volunteers did some jogging exercises. Physiological, biochemical, and muscle strength measurements were performed after jogging. The data were statistically treated. Results: The magnitude of change in the sagittal angle of the knee and ankle joint did not increase significantly with increasing jogging rate. The changes in the sagittal angles of the hip, knee, and ankle joints were the same for the volunteers with different jogging rates. After 60 minutes of exercise, the low-fitness group showed faster breathing, an elevated heart rate, and a higher rate of lactate and creatinine in the blood. After 120 minutes of exercise training, all sedentary volunteers showed an increase in lactate, creatinine, respiratory rate, and heart rate (P<0.05). The test performance started to decrease at 400 meters. Conclusion: The maximal activation of different parts of the locomotor system changed under different rates of movement. Brief, controlled jogging may be beneficial to lower limb muscles. Still, long-term jogging may cause even more damage to the body and deleterious changes to rehabilitation in blood and biochemical parameters. Level of evidence II; Therapeutic studies - investigation of treatment outcomes.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Exercise tests are an important tool in the investigation of myocardial ischemia. The ramp protocol has gained increasing importance in clinical practice because of the possibility of individualizing its exercise intensity. OBJECTIVE: To assess and compare the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of Bruce and ramp protocols for exercise testing in the diagnosis of myocardial ischemia considering myocardial perfusion scintigraphy as the reference standard. Secondary objectives included the assessment of hemodynamic profiles, functional capacity, and the incidence of arrhythmias in each of the protocols. METHODS: Participants underwent exercise testing using the ramp and Bruce protocols, and the tests' diagnostic power was assessed. For testing the difference between data provided by both protocols, we used a paired Student's t-test or Wilcoxon test, depending on the assumption of data normality. The level of significance adopted for all tests was 5%. RESULTS: The ramp protocol showed sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy values of 55.6%, 82.4%, and 76.7%, respectively, whereas the Bruce protocol had results of 77.8%, 64.7%, and 67.4%, respectively. The maximum heart rate and double product at peak exercise were significantly higher in the Bruce protocol (p = 0.043 and p = 0.040, respectively). No differences were observed between the incidence of arrhythmias in both protocols. CONCLUSION: The Bruce protocol presented higher sensitivity for detecting ischemia on the exercise test, while the ramp protocol presented higher specificity and accuracy.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate the strength and ratios of the plantar flexors and ankle dorsiflexors in recreational runners with medial tibial stress syndrome and to assess the association between muscle strength and the level of pain in this population. Methods: Two groups (control and medial tibial stress syndrome) of eighteen runners each participated in this cross-sectional study. Isokinetic dynamometry was used to evaluate muscle strength, and for the analysis, the normalized isokinetic peak torque controlled by gender was used. Results: The medial tibial stress syndrome group showed lower normalized isokinetic peak torque in the dorsiflexors in the concentric (p = 0.008) eccentric (p = 0.011) contraction, as well as a lower plantar flexor, normalized isokinetic peak torque in the concentric (p = 0.001) and eccentric (p = 0.02) when compared to the control group. However, there was no difference in the normalized isokinetic peak torque ratio representative of the stance (p = 0.62) and swing phase (p = 0.16), and the level of pain was not correlated with the strength concentric (p = 0.32) and eccentric (p = 0.621) of plantar flexors, nor to the concentric (p = 0.21) and eccentric of dorsiflexors (p = 0.54). Conclusion: Recreational runners with MTSS showed decreased muscle strength in the sagittal plane of the ankle, no correlation with the level of pain, and no changing the ratio between plantar flexors and dorsiflexors.

ABSTRACT

Objective To compare the differences in long-term jogging and Tai Chi in terms of neuromuscular latency and time to peak of surface electromyography (EMG) in older males during lateral sudden perturbation. In addition, an effective means to enhance neuromuscular response and muscle contraction efficiency of older males during lateral postural challenges was investigated. Methods Postural reactions of young males, older sedentary male controls (without regular exercises), older male joggers (with long-term jogging practice), and older male Tai Chi participants (with long-term Tai Chi practice) were evoked by means of a sudden unpredictable lateral translation platform. Surface EMG signals of peroneus longus, anterior tibialis, gluteus medius, and erector spinae were collected by an EMG detection and analysis system. Results The latencies of peroneus longus, anterior tibialis, and gluteus medius were delayed in the older sedentary male controls compared with those in young males. The neuromuscular reactions of anterior tibialis and erector spinae in older Tai Chi male participants were faster than those of older sedentary male controls. The contraction speeds of peroneus longus, anterior tibialis, and gluteus medius in young males were higher than those in three older groups during sudden lateral perturbations. Conclusions Long-term Tai Chi practice can enhance the responses of ankle and trunk muscles of older males during lateral postural challenges, but it has little effect on the muscle contraction efficiency of older males.

ABSTRACT

Background: Maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) is considered the gold standard of cardio-pulmonary and muscle cell fitness. Reduced cardiopulmonary fitness is associated with increased cardiovascular disease. Low cardio respiratory fitness in young adults has emerged as an important factor for developing cardiovascular comorbidies later in middle age. Obesity is a serious & widespread problem globally. Increased body fat as predicted by body mass index is an additional factor for developing cardiovascular diseases. Aims & Objective: The current study was designed to evaluate cardio respiratory fitness in terms of VO2max in young healthy males and to correlate between obesity and cardio respiratory fitness. Material and Methods: Sixty young healthy male subjects in the age group of 18 to 22 years were included in this study group. Body mass index was measured as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters square. Cardio respiratory fitness in terms of VO2max was predicted by following the protocol of Treadmill Jogging Test (TMJ). Results: There was a highly significant negative correlation between obesity and VO2max, r= -0.88 p<0.05. In contrast, obesity shows a highly significant direct correlation with Treadmill Heart Rate, r=0.80 p<0.05. Conclusion: The result suggests that the reduced cardiac performance during progressive work rate exercise in obese individuals. Greater the BMI, more severe will be the functional impairment, suggesting excessive amount of body fat on cardio respiratory functions and oxygen uptake by working muscles.

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the effect of reasonable jogging speed on body shape and walking gait to make people acquire graceful posture through jogging. Method Five jogging speeds were selected according to related measurements. Kinematical data of subjects (15 young women volunteers) in jogging were measured by the motion capture system, while the EMG signals of 8 major muscles in lower limb were collected simultaneously. The mean angles of hip, knee and ankle joints in sagittal plane at different speeds were calculated. The subject whose data was closest to the mean value was chosen as the research subject and analyze the kinematical data. Results The angles of the subject's hip, knee and ankle joints in sagittal plane at different speeds in a gait cycle were presented, and activation curves of her 8 major muscles were obtained during lower limb movements. Relationships between the jogging speed, jogging stage, muscle activation and joint angle were described by the scoring method. Conclusions The range of joint angle and maximum of muscle activation don't change with jogging speed monotonously. The study provides a reference for young women to choose their own jogging speed.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to determine if there were any reliable predictors for achieving jogging requirements after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. We analyzed associations among variables collected from 128 subjects at 12 weeks postoperatively, including jogging parameters (i.e. pain, apprehension, speed, and distance), the isokinetic muscle strength of the leg extensors, the knee stability, and patient's profiles (i.e. age, sex, activity level, body mass index (BMI), meniscectomy, and cartilage injury).Jogging parameters were significantly correlated with the isokinetic muscle strength of leg extensors, but not with the knee stability. With the jogging ability of achieving a distance of 2000m at a velicity of 9km/h being an objective variable, a logistic regression analysis revealed that the isokinetic muscle strength of leg extensors and BMI were considered relevant. Using a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis and a contingency table, the cut-off values of the isokinetic muscle strength of leg extensors to the uninvolved side and body weight were 85% and 1.9Nm/kg, respectively, whose sensitivity and specificity were 0.90 and 0.82, respectively. Therefore, we concluded that the isokinetic muscle strength of leg extensors is a reliable predictor for projecting the timing to start jogging after ACL reconstruction.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The assessment of how much people exercise needs to be analyzed in order to promote their health status. METHODS: Accordingly, 2001 Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey was performed during a two-month period beginning November 1st, 2001. Questionnaires on physical activities have been completed by 9,170 persons (88.45%) among 10,368 persons over 12 years old. We analyzed 7,838 subjects who were over 20 years old. RESULTS: Among the total, 71.8% persons of the respondents did not work out at all. Among them, 14.9% respondents were classified as lower exercise group, 6.9% middle exercise group and 6.4% as higher exercise group. The number of middle and higher exercise groups were increased on 2001 survey compared to those in 1998. Daily walking hours were 65.8 +/- 73.6 minutes. A proper amount of exercise were performed by older age groups than those in their twenties, by town residents than villagers, by unmarried people than married or divorced or bereaved ones, by higher educated people, by people with more weight, by those who were felt less stress, and by non drinkers. Favorite exercises were walking, mountaineering, jogging and working out at a fitness club which were chosen by 62.6% of the respondents. CONCLUSION: Many respondents did not work out at all and overall exercise rate was low. The rate of proper exercise was different by demographic features.

ABSTRACT

The study was performed to clear the optimal frequency of jogging for the senior subject. The subject had run for 23 years, from 1971 to 1994. The distance of jogging was 5 km a day. It increased to 25 km during the 3 months immediately before the 17 th Honolulu Marathon. The electro cardiogram, and biochemical analysis of blood had been measured for 23 years. Annual total distance was 800±50 (mean±SD) km from 1971 to1984, and 300±20 km from 1985 to 1992. A decrease in the distance of jogging ws due to a change in the frequency of jogging from four times per week to one time per 5 days. Arrhythmia, an abnormal finding of blood biochemical analysis, and change in body weight were not observed after the decrease in frequency of jogging. It was suggested that the optimal froquency of jogging may be one time per 5 days for the present subject.
